First Outline

To say I have never struggled in school would be a complete lie. I did well in school with very few hiccups basically from Kindergarten through to 8th grade. It was when high school began that I realized that I couldn’t quite breeze through like I did previously. I took honors and AP classes thinking I would get through them fairly easily, but the increase in difficulty for these subjects was something I was unprepared for. I think this divide is something that everyone experienced when moving up to high school.

Even with some difficulties including the pandemic as well as some health issues that caused me to be out of school for around 3 months, I was able to get through high school with A’s and B’s in all of my courses.

The biggest academic hurdle for me was yet to come. College was much different than any schooling I had received before, and my first semester was rough to say the least.

Like everyone else, I struggle with time management and making time to do my work. However, one of the biggest reasons I have struggled with keeping up with work for my classes is the lack of motivation. To improve myself academically, I will have to start with gaining the motivation to do the work in my courses – and to do them well.

I entered UNE as an Undeclared Major. At this moment, I am still undeclared. I only have until next semester to declare my major officially, and I still am unsure what to choose.Last year as well as this semester, I tried to pick a variety of different courses in hopes that one might stick out to me as a potential field of study.

A large, if not the most important, motivator for students is being able to graduate with their degree in something they are passionate about and getting a job in that field. As someone who doesn’t have a major declared and is unsure about future job prospects, that motivation isn’t really something I possess. By trying out new subjects at UNE, I hope to find something that I have an interest in and can see myself studying for the rest of my time in college.

Another impact of my lack of motivation is that it causes me to often procrastinate on my work. By working to improve my motivation through looking for subjects I might be able to become passionate about and blocking out time to do the work for my classes, I also hope to reduce the amount of procrastination I do.

Overall, my biggest goal in improving myself academically is to branch out more into different subjects and declare my major in something that I can see motivating me in the future.
